The face of an imbecile... they know nothing about why these cars are "illegal" in the USA (probably) other than what they have been fed by their superiors (emissions, crash test safety, etc.). They don't realize that Mercedes "lobbied" (Read: bribed) congress in the 1980's!
BmanUltima's car still hasn't been fixed yet, he'll get on it tomorrow, honest.

Just give it a few years. It'll be safer then, right?

Just remember EPA/U.S. Customs, for every car you crush, another 10 will be illegally modified.

The US Government suffers from Not Invented Here syndrome.
That is all.

Yup if you are dumb and try to avoid the 25 year ban this is what has a high chance of happening to your car. It's a dumb law but if you want your car to have no risk of destruction you will follow it.

Dammit, I get irrationally angry every time I see this. WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO ME?

We're seizing and destroying illegally imported vehicles to "save lives."
Brought to you by the same people who produced the Ford Pinto, and who may or may not have a murder quota.

I may have misunderstood, but it sounded like the cop said the person buying the car thought it was a 1975 but it was actually a 2005 that was illegally altered to look like a 1975. Thats not the fault of the buyer.

That is ridiculous then. I hope he can sue to get his money back.

Thinking about this further this is why you always should look at the VINs when importing a car.

Hopefully. That would seriously suck to be on the losing end of that proposition

There's an enormous flaw here, in that improper repair of a 25 year old one of these with portions of a newer one up to present day can (if not properly recorded, etc. and sometimes even with) count as falsifying a "newer" vehicle. Despite the fact that the 15 year old one and the 25 year old one are in almost every way the same damn vehicle. There are plenty of junk grade '85s which would be most easily and cheaply fixed by buying a junk grade or slightly better '95 and combining the two - but now that Customs have their dander up, they'll trash the product of that if given any excuse. Majority new parts, or the pokey, guv. Even so little as an engine swap to a more modern one will get you in trouble.

They really should go based on the age of the chassis and not the car. Like if a 89 Skyline is legal why not a 94? They are the same thing aside a c ouple trim pieces.
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

That guy made it sound like he just arrested Hitler.
"This shows the hard work of our...officers. We kept an unsafe vehicle off American roads. That can save lives. This is a victory...and what's up on top of that pile is our trophy"
No, you didn't keep an "unsafe" vehicle off American roads. It's no more deadly here than it is in Britain. If anything, many European safety and emissions standards are a little higher than ours. But because they are different, regardless of if they are higher or lower, they must automatically be inferior and any car that was built to those standards must be deemed unsafe.
Because there aren't hundreds of thousands of legally-registered cars running around the US that are a million times less safe than an old Defender. Not at all. Nope, a 1985 Suburban with more rust than metal and tires balder than Howie Mandel, belching smoke out the back and getting seven miles to the gallon is fine. But a Defender? Forget it. If you drive a Defender, the terrorists win.
And yes, with the stupid law in place, you are asking for trouble if you were to knowingly import a newer car. But the law is still idiotic.

Thank God they took that monstrous car off the road. I feel safer already.
